Centuries ago, Pedro Álvares Cabral set sail into the unknown and changed the map of the world. Today, a vessel bearing his name continues that legacy by shaping the continents.
The Pedro Álvares Cabral, a 14,000 m³ trailing suction hopper dredger of the Jan De Nul Group, recently arrived at our Klaipeda yard for a special survey, and our team was ready to welcome her for a new chapter of maintenance and renewal.
Named after the famous Portuguese explorer who first landed in Brazil, the Pedro Álvares Cabral is built for discovery in her own right, charting new paths across the world’s oceans as part of Jan De Nul Group’s powerful dredging fleet.
Over the past weeks, she has undergone a full spectrum of work. Both tailshafts were withdrawn and carefully serviced. Her rudders were overhauled. The underwater hull was cleaned and treated with high-performance silicone-based coatings. Inside the hopper, steel renewal works were carried out, along with the renewal of the fixed part of the overflow valve. We also tackled the complex bottom door systems, replacing rubber seals, adjusting hinges, installing doubler plates, and making sure every component is seaworthy and sound.
The jet water piping was replaced both along the keelsons and around the hopper doors. Her self-unloading system, including critical gate valves, received maintenance. And we ensured the trailing suction pipe and other piping systems were fully inspected and serviced.
Each step of the work had a single goal: to ensure the vessel can perform its mission with the same confidence and reliability that defines the Jan De Nul name.
This project adds to a long-standing and trusted partnership between Jan De Nul Group and BLRT Repair Yards. Over the years, we have worked side by side on multiple vessels built on shared values of innovation, quality, and mutual trust.
