The BLRT REPAIR YARDS Tallinn team is again welcoming a vessel from JD-Contractor A/S – this time, the AHTS SIMA, a DP2 offshore installation vessel. Built for offshore installation and support work, SIMA is designed to operate globally, taking on roles such as ROV work, cablelaying, towing, anchor handling, and supply operations.
The scope of work includes extensive steel replacement even in the most confined, machinery-packed areas, such as the deck inside the rudder compartment. In addition, the project involves insulation work, large-scale piping installations, mechanical maintenance on the main engines and bow thruster, and a full hull cleaning and painting
This isn’t the first time JD-Contractor A/S has entrusted us with their fleet. Almost a year ago, VINA, a multipurpose DP1 installation vessel, underwent maintenance and BWTS installation at the yard in Tallinn.
Now, SIMA follows, reinforcing the partnership!

Conversion of a bulk carrier for transshipment operations.
How to turn a complex idea into reality?
Structural and equipment upgrades
The journey began with disassembling four (4) existing shipboard cranes, followed by installing barbettes, bulkhead reinforcements, and specialized foundations. Simultaneously, the transverse coamings of cargo holds No. 2 and No. 4 were relocated to optimize cargo operations, and two (2) hatch covers were modernized to meet updated requirements. The advanced Liebherr CBG 360 cranes were later installed at the Liebherr plant.
Enhanced manoeuvrability and power
To improve the vessel’s manoeuvrable capabilities, we installed a bow thruster and thruster tunnel. Additionally, we equipped the ship with an extra mooring winch and twist locks for two container-type Technological Diesel Generators on the upper deck, enabling increased functionality and operational flexibility.
Electrical and lighting innovations
A highlight of the project was the extensive electrical work. Over 14,230 meters of cables were laid and fastened to connect the Technological Diesel Generators on the upper deck, cargo cranes, thruster, and deck winch. We also enhanced onboard visibility and safety by installing additional floodlights, barbettes lighting, and step-down transformers to power crane systems with varying voltage needs.
Modernization of control and navigation systems
To support the advanced crane installations and ensure seamless operations, we relocated radar antennas to the foremast, added new cables, and moved the masthead lantern atop crane No.1. The main steering station was relocated to the wheelhouse starboard side for optimized control and navigation.
Cooling system upgrades
The thruster room received additional fans, cooling pumps for the thruster motor, and a thruster frequency converter, ensuring efficient operation under varying conditions.
A unified team effort. Engineers, electricians, welders, fitters, and project managers all brought their expertise to the table. Every challenge was tackled with creativity, precision, and a shared dedication to achieving the best possible result.
ZINA reimagined. With these upgrades, ZINA is ready to take on a new chapter with enhanced efficiency, manoeuvrability, and versatility. This transformation reflects the expertise and dedication of the team at BLRT REPAIR YARDS Klaipeda, delivering solutions that meet the highest standards and set vessels like ZINA on a course for success.

After a long-term charter in Ireland, the Passenger/Ro-Ro Cargo ferry STAR of Tallinn Grupp has returned to Estonia and, as of February 9, 2025, is sailing between Paldiski and Kapellskär.
Before hitting the route, STAR underwent maintenance at Turku Repair Yard, one of BLRT Repair Yards, where our team ensured it was in top shape for passengers travelling by car and cargo transporters. The work included minor mechanical, steel, and piping repairs, along with extensive surface treatment, giving STAR a fresh new look to mark its grand return.
Now refreshed, STAR offers a smoother and more convenient way to travel between Estonia and Sweden. On selected days, travellers can even benefit from up to two daily departures.

Servicing some of the world’s most advanced refrigerated cargo vessels. After welcoming COOL EXPRESS, the world’s largest reefer, and her sister ship COOL EAGLE, we continue our collaboration with our Japanese customer as we welcome another impressive visitor – STAR COURAGE.
While docked at BLRT Repair Yards in Klaipėda, the 188.6m-long STAR COURAGE underwent essential maintenance to ensure its continued performance. Our team carried out hull blasting and painting, overhauled the auxiliary generator, repaired and replaced various pipes and valves, and completed other routine drydocking works.
Designed to transport temperature-sensitive cargo such as fruits, vegetables, meat, and seafood, STAR COURAGE ensures these goods reach their destinations in pristine condition. Operating between key ports, she plays a significant role in global food supply chains, maintaining cargo at carefully controlled temperatures throughout her journey.

For ferries and RoPax vessels, every moment in the drydock must be used efficiently to ensure a seamless return to service. With tight schedules and demanding operations, every day counts, as delays can impact thousands of passengers and disrupt logistics.
When Romantika, operated by Tallink Grupp, arrived in Naantali for maintenance, our team undertook a comprehensive scope of work to ensure her safety and reliability. Thanks to the close collaboration between the yard’s team and the vessel’s crew, all tasks were completed on time, and today, Romantika departed from Naantali- two days ahead of schedule.
Minimizing downtime, maximizing efficiency!

But why winter, and why ferries?
The Baltic Sea plays a vital role in connecting communities and industries. During the colder months, many ferries and Ro-Ro/passenger ships pause their busy schedules to undergo essential maintenance and upgrades, ensuring they are ready to operate smoothly and safely for the peak travel season ahead.
Our teams in Naantali, Klaipeda and Tallinn are working hard to ensure every ferry receives the care and expertise it deserves. Because every repair, upgrade, and improvement contributes to a safer, more enjoyable journey for passengers across the region!

Our Klaipeda team recently completed a series of key upgrades on the Coral Fraseri, a dedicated gas carrier from Anthony Veder’s fleet. Now, the vessel is equipped to operate also as an LNG bunker vessel.
During drydocking, our team delivered targeted enhancements to support the vessel’s continued performance:
- Design by the in-house Design & Engineering bureau Western Baltic Engineering, manufacturing, and installation of a 30-ton cargo operation platform
- Execution of complex condenser dismounting tasks
- Crane system modifications
- Accommodation upgrades
- Tank measurement radar installation
- Auxiliary engine dismounting and mounting
Ruud te Selle, Fleet Manager at Anthony Veder, commented:
„In addition to the Special Survey conducted at the BLRT Repair Yards in Klaipeda, Coral Fraseri received extensive modifications. Besides the possibility to transport ethylene, she now also has the opportunity to operate as an LNG bunker vessel .
We are very happy with the work carried out by the experienced team at the shipyard, who in close cooperation with Anthony Veder ` s people completed the project safely and efficiently.”
Ingrida Streckienė, Director at BLRT Repair Yards Klaipeda, added:
„Great results stem from strong partnerships. Years of collaboration with Anthony Veder have fostered a partnership we are truly proud of. The Coral Fraseri project exemplifies the synergy between their vision and our team’s expertise. It is an honour to contribute to the success of their fleet.”
By supporting shipowners like Anthony Veder, BLRT Repair Yards contributes to the longevity and performance of modern fleets navigating today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.
The Coral Fraseri returned to service to continue transporting critical cargo safely across the seas.
